Luminous is a sculptural installation shedding light on the way wildlife is affected by changing environmental conditions on earth. Amphibians are considered a key indicator species of the fact that our entire ecosystem is in danger. Frogs are survivors. They have lived through three global mass extinctions, and yet since the 1970s, around 200 frog species have disappeared, with a projected loss of hundreds more in the next century.
Frogs are under threat on nearly every continent. Frogs are not being washed up on the beach, or hunted as trophies or they are quietly disappearing one by one. Most amphibians live in the tropics. They play an important role in our ecosystems. They control insect pests and act as food for other animals. All amphibians have permeable skin, which they use for breathing and drinking. This makes them very susceptible to toxins. For this reason, they are often considered an indicator of the health of an ecosystem.
Over one hundred lifesize sculptures of different frog species glow in darkness of this installation to remind us of this impeding threat. They are quietly letting us know that our beautiful planet is in serious trouble. Througout the installation, you will find over ten different frog species that have become extinct, critically endangered or have declining numbers. I invite you to sit with them and meditate on what they are trying to tell us and take action before it’s too late.
